Strabismus Treatment

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

After a strabismus or squint has been diagnosed, your practitioner will investigate the presence of any significant optical prescription. If an optical prescription is required it will be prescribed in the form of spectacles. Many squints (particularly those that turn inward) can be partially corrected with spectacles alone. The principal aim of treatment is not only to improve the appearance of the eyes but also to improve the vision in the lazy eye. In children aged 9 or earlier (where the visual system is still developing) vision can be improved by patching the non-squinting eye. Patching may be advised on an intermittent basis in order to stimulate the vision in the ‘lazy eye’, it should not be performed for significant prolonged periods.
